Date Night #1: Fook Kin’ great char siew!

This week’s date night was full of surprises—nostalgia, delicious food, and a bit of cheeky fun. My husband and I have been on the hunt for the best char siew in Singapore, and spoiler…! We found it at Fook Kin! This trendy spot not only serves mouthwatering dishes but also delivered a taste of my husband’s Hong Kong roots. Here’s how our night went down!

Every morning on the way to work, we tune into The Muttons on Class 95 — our favourite DJs. Back in 2018, they teamed up with Fat Boys burger joint to create the char siew haven that is Fook Kin. A casual mention on their radio show (I mean, being a DJ definitely has its perks when it comes to advertising, right?) and I immediately added it to my date night list (yep, there’s a list!).

We headed over on a Wednesday evening around 6:30 PM. It was fairly quiet when we arrived, but as the night progressed, the place filled up fast. If you’re planning to visit, be sure to book ahead!

The vibe at Fook Kin is casual yet vibrant, with a trendy-industrial hawker stall feel and a playful, cheeky twist. The pink “We Fook Kin Love You” neon sign was the perfect backdrop for a fun photo op. The energy was lively, yet it had just the right laid-back atmosphere for a relaxed date night.

Let’s talk about the star of the night—the char siew. We ordered the large mix platter with both roasted pork and char siew, and it did not disappoint. The flavours were mind-blowing! We also tried the Superior Light Soy Sauce Choy Sum with Golden Garlic—super tasty—and the Wok Hei Fried Rice with Roast Pork Crunchies, which was delicious. That said, the char siew was so amazing that I’d recommend just getting plain rice next time to really let the pork shine.

We also sampled two of Fook Kin’s signature beers: A Fook Kin Beer and Punchin’ Rye Pale Ale. Both were light and fruity, making them the perfect pairing with the rich, savoury flavours of the char siew.

• Try the beer: The A Fook Kin Beer and Punchin’ Rye Pale Ale are fruity and refreshing—great with the char siew.

Worth it?

I’m giving this date night a solid 9/10. The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was fun, and it ended up being way more special than we anticipated. Sure, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but it’s totally worth it. We’ll definitely be back!

The meal wasn’t just about the food; it brought back fun memories of our time in Hong Kong, where we lived for two years before getting married and starting a family. It sparked nostalgia for our relationship and led to a heartfelt conversation about some of the unforgettable moments we shared there. This is the true magic of date nights!

From my husband’s perspective, someone who was born and raised in Hong Kong and therefore a char siew enthusiast, he was also super impressed. He said, “The best char siew I’ve had in Singapore.”

Few words, but it says it all – Fook Kin’s char siew clearly impressed him and brought back memories of his home and comfort food.

He rates it a 9/10 too.

Wrap-up

What started as a simple dinner ended up being a surprisingly meaningful night. Not only did we enjoy amazing food, but the meal took us down memory lane, back to our Hong Kong days before kids. It felt like a small but perfect slice of our past—and the ideal way to kick off our date nights in 2025 – and my new blog!
