With Labour Day giving us a midweek breather ((check out my Celebrate Labour Day! 8 date night ideas to honour hard work in Singapore blog post for date night inspiration this week!), we decided to try something a little out of the ordinary. A magic show? On a date night? At a place called Theatre of Wonder? We had no idea what we were getting into — and that’s exactly what made it so fun. Add cocktails, good company and a pre-show dinner at our ultimate comfort spot, and it turned out to be one of our most entertaining nights yet.
Where?
🥟 Dinner at Din Tai Fung, Junction 8 (Bishan)
Our go-to for consistently delicious Chinese food in a relaxed, fuss-free setting. We’ve been there countless times and it never disappoints.
🎩 WunderBar at the Theatre of Wonder, Oxley Bizhub (near Tai Seng MRT) – a magic show with German magician Stefan Ebinger
Don’t let the industrial exterior fool you—inside is a luxe, intimate speakeasy-style bar and theatre where magic and mixology collide. Definitely one of Singapore’s more unique hidden gems.
What?
Before the tricks and tipples, my husband and I had one very important thing to take care of first: dinner. We started the evening just the two of us, fuelled by a craving for dumplings, noodles and rice. Din Tai Fung hit the spot as usual.
Here’s what we ordered:
- Prawn fried rice
- Garlic spinach
- Noodles with vegetable & pork wontons in spicy sesame oil
- Oriental wontons with black vinegar & chilli oil (Our absolute favourite!)
- Xiao long bao – we tried the chicken ones for a change, and regretted this decision. They were still tasty, but the classic pork ones are a step above!
Yes, that was just for two people. Yes, we ate every bite. And yes, we’d absolutely do it again. 😂
Everything was, as always, delicious — Din Tai Fung never lets us down. It’s the ultimate pre-date dinner spot: reliable, satisfying and somehow always leaves us in a better mood.
Then it was time for the main event…
WunderBar at the Theatre of Wonder – Magic, comedy & cocktails
🎟️ We booked through Eventbrite ($88 for one ticket with two drinks included), and it was well worth it.
First impressions: slightly confusing. The venue is inside Oxley Bizhub, which looks like part office, part industrial estate. We honestly weren’t sure if we were in the right place. But once you step into the Theatre of Wonder, it’s like entering a secret world: velvet furnishings, dramatic lighting and a bar that feels like something out of a Gatsby party. Plush, intimate and very cool.
The star of the night? Stefan Ebinger, our German magician for the evening, was equal parts hilarious and mind-blowingly skilled. Think close-up magic with ropes, rings, cards and even disappearing glasses — performed just centimetres from your face. Add in the free-flow banter, cheeky jokes, and an enthusiastic audience, and it was like a mini Vegas show tucked away in an intimate bar.
There was lots of audience participation, but it felt fun, not awkward. I caught myself oohing and ahhing out loud like an excitable kid—and I wasn’t alone. Even though you know it’s sleight of hand, there’s something magical about letting yourself be fooled and delighted.
A few standout moments:
- My husband’s signed $2 note ended up inside a lemon — yes, really. Cut open right in front of us.
- I got to hop behind the bar to perform a trick with a magical frog. I’m basically a magician now.
- The cocktails were next-level — crafted with care and flair. The bartender was part mixologist, part artist and a full-on magician in his own right.
Going with friends made the whole night even better. There’s something extra fun about shared gasps, whispering guesses, laughing out loud and sharing those “HOW did he DO that?!” moments.
WOW Tips
- Book through Eventbrite – They can contact you if you’re running late.
- Go for the drinks-included package – It adds to the atmosphere and makes the experience more fun.
- Go as a group – The show is intimate, but bringing friends adds a social vibe and makes it less intimidating if you’re new to magic shows.
- Don’t be put off by the location – Yes, it’s in an odd building. Yes, it feels a bit sketchy on the way in. But trust the process—it’s worth it.
Worth it?
Absolutely! It was playful, surprising, and just a little bit surreal—in the best way. A night of delicious deception and delightful company – it all added up to a one-of-a-kind night. A perfect reminder that date nights don’t always have to be romantic or fancy… sometimes they can just be FUN.
I give it a 9/10 – a little weird, a lot wonderful.
Would 100% go again, especially to check out different magicians in future shows!

Wrap-up
This date night really reminded me of why we keep up this little tradition. It’s not always about fancy restaurants or deep conversations—sometimes, it’s about letting your guard down, laughing out loud and being surprised together. There’s something genuinely bonding about watching your partner get wide-eyed at a magic trick, or giggling like a teenager when your friend’s card magically appears!
you’re looking to shake up your usual routine, Theatre of Wonder is one of those hidden gems that feels like a total discovery. Go in curious, come out enchanted.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever seen close-up magic like this — or if you have any other quirky Singapore date night recommendations!
