Yesterday was World Elephant Day — yes, it’s a thing! 🐘 A global celebration held annually on August 12 to raise awareness about the plight of these majestic creatures—highlighting threats they face from poaching, habitat loss, and human conflict.
Since elephants are my favourite animal, I decided to give this week’s date night a (very) loose elephant theme by heading out for Thai food. Why? Because elephants are a national symbol of Thailand, and any excuse for good green Thai curry is a good reason in my book.
Where?
📍 Saveur Thai @ Foodies Clan, New Tech Park (Serangoon)
📍 Cycle route: 20 minutes each way from home
What?
Saveur Thai, a casual hawker stall, used to be just five minutes from our house—lucky us! But then, like so many places in Singapore, it closed its original location and moved – unlucky us! Thankfully, its new home is still within reach—just a short bike away instead of a stroll away. A small compromise when the food is this good.
The ride was surprisingly breezy — literally – we didn’t even break a sweat (a minor miracle in Singapore!).
Saveur Thai is at New Teach Park, tucked upstairs in Foodies Clan, a nicely decorated hawker-style food court with an “outside-inside” feel. Think hanging coloured lightbulbs, faux fences with vines, and a sliding door that opens to a small park. It feels intimate, charming, and alive.
The menu is smaller than it was back when it was near us, but all our old favourites were still there, so we ordered:
– Green mango salad – tangy, crunchy refreshment
– Thai fish cake – bouncy, fragrant, just lightly spiced
– Green curry chicken rice with egg – creamy coconut, tender chicken, soothing heat
– Thai basil chicken rice with egg – herbal, savoury, punchy
To wash it all down, we shared a jug of beer, served in tiny glasses so it feels like you’re drinking more. Little joys.
The food was as good as we remembered — spicy, tasty and full of flavour. The food was spicy, tasty, and satisfying. It captured the essence of Thailand without having to leave Singapore—and priced right at hawker-food comfort levels.
WOW Tips
⭐️ Cycle if you can — it makes the beer taste even better!
⭐️ Go early if you want the pick of seats in Foodies Clan.
⭐️ Don’t skip the green mango salad — it’s a perfect starter in the heat.
⭐️ Bring cash or pay via QR — not all stalls take cards.
⭐️ Beer jug + tiny glasses = instant fun—it’s the little things.
⭐️ Link your date to a fun theme, even loosely — it makes it more memorable.
Worth it?
7/10 from me.
The food hit the spot, the atmosphere was charming, and it was fun to link it to my favourite animal’s day—even if subtly. Plus it brought back memories of when it used to be right around the corner.
What HE said…
“A bike ride is a good way to make it feel like you deserve a beer. And we found a fun place nearby that we’d never have stumbled upon otherwise. Don’t be afraid to just go local.”
7/10
