Date Night #11: Pie in the face – A Pi Day special (that didn’t go to plan!)

After last week’s fun-filled St. Paddy’s pub night (see Date Night #10: Flipping fun at French Fold!), we decided to keep the themed date nights going. With Pi Day (March 14th) upon us, we planned a pie-filled evening — because who doesn’t love a good excuse to eat pie? But, as you’ll see, things didn’t exactly go as planned. Still, we made it work, and our Pi Day adventure turned out to be a fun (and delicious) one!

Where?

Fail #1: Pies and Pints, 50 Robinson Road (It was closed – total fail!)
Fail #2: A loop around Marina Bay to burn off our pie calories (also didn’t happen!)

But hey, no worries, we ended up at:
Molly Malone’s Irish Pub – Circular Road
Dallas – Boat Quay

What?

The plan was simple: Pies and Pints for dinner, followed by a walk around the Marina Bay loop (because Pi is the ratio of a circle—get it?). But when we showed up at Pies and Pints, we were met with a closed sign and the smell of missed opportunity. Lesson learned: Always double-check opening hours, especially when pie is involved! Sorry, Pies and Pints—we’ll be back another time.

With our pie dreams momentarily crushed, we had to think fast, and we decided on Molly Malone’s, Singapore’s first Irish pub. Not only did they serve hearty pies, but it also gave us the perfect chance to hit both the Pi (“pie”) theme and the St. Paddy’s theme (March 17th) in one swoop. Bonus!

Molly Malone’s feels like a little slice of Ireland in the heart of Singapore. Dark wood interiors, cozy nooks and live music (every night except Saturdays, which are for sports) make it an excellent spot for a casual night out.

So, what did we order?

🥧 Chicken pot pie (Me) – Creamy and comforting, but I’m a sucker for a full pie crust, and this one just had a puff pastry lid. Still, it was really tasty!
🥘 Molly’s Irish stew (Husband) – Hearty lamb goodness with a big chunk of bread to soak up that rich gravy.
🍟 Steak-cut chips – When our meals arrived we quickly realized our meal looked a little… bare. The stew was just stew, and the pie was just a pie. So, we ordered chips on the side, and wow—crispy, golden and totally necessary!
🍺 Little Creatures pale ale – Guinness would have been more on-theme, but we’re saving that for this weekend’s St. Paddy’s celebrations. Light, refreshing and paired well with the hearty food.

After dinner, we needed to rectify the fact that my husband hadn’t had pie for our Pi Day date night! So after a quick Google search, we found Dallas at Boat Quay which had an (excellent… apparently) apple pie on the menu.

🥧 The apple pie: A huge slice packed with spiced apples and currants, served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Not skimping on portions at all—well done, Dallas!
🍦 Me? I’m not into desserts really – I like my sweet things plain.  (I don’t even like chocolate – yes, I know, I’m weird). I stole a few spoonfuls of the ice cream while my husband happily devoured the rest.

🍻 More Pale Ale – Happy hour at Dallas lasts until 9 pm, so we wrapped up the night with one more round before heading home, full and content.

WOW Tips:

Worth It?

I’m giving this date night a 7/10

It wasn’t exactly what we had planned, but we still had a great time with tasty food, good beer, and each other’s company. The flexibility and spontaneity made it fun—even if it wasn’t perfect!

What HE Said…

“For a last-minute backup, Boat Quay is always a solid choice. You can’t go wrong with the riverside bars. And Molly’s serves up one of the best pub grub meals in Singapore. Plus, the live music adds a nice touch!”

He also rates it 7/10.

Wrap-up

Sometimes, things don’t go to plan—and that’s okay! The night still turned out great with tasty food, good beer, and, most importantly, each other. The key takeaway? Be flexible, roll with the punches and just enjoy your time together. Whether it’s Pi Day or any day, date nights are about having fun and making memories.
